Zocdoc’s Acquisition of Sohar Health Puts Insurance Clarity Earlier in the Care Journey

The acquisition highlights a critical patient access challenge: helping people understand their coverage while they are finding and choosing care

The acquisition highlights a critical patient access challenge: helping people understand their coverage while they are finding and choosing care.

Finding a behavioral health provider with an available appointment is only part of accessing care. Patients also need to understand whether that provider accepts their insurance, whether the services they need are covered, and what they may be expected to pay.

When those questions remain unresolved, uncertainty carries into scheduling and intake. Patients may hesitate to book, while provider teams must investigate coverage, clarify benefits, and resolve discrepancies before care can begin. For many behavioral health providers, this administrative burden is compounded by razor-thin profit margins and severe staffing constraints, leaving them with little room to absorb the costs of manual insurance verification and billing errors.

Zocdoc’s acquisition of Sohar Health brings this challenge into focus. The transaction—the first acquisition in Zocdoc’s nearly 20-year history—builds on a partnership that began in early 2025, when Zocdoc selected Sohar as its insurance technology partner. It also points to an important opportunity for behavioral health: bringing insurance information closer to the moment patients are searching for and choosing care, offering an automated solution for financially strained clinics.

Insurance information shapes access

Insurance verification is often treated as an administrative task associated with registration or billing. But the information it provides influences decisions much earlier. Coverage and network status help determine which providers patients can see, while benefit information helps them understand the financial implications of seeking care.

For behavioral health organizations, these questions can involve additional complexity, including benefits administered separately from a patient’s medical plan. Finding an insurance record is therefore only the beginning. Teams need information relevant to the provider and the care being sought.

When that information arrives late, an appointment may already be booked before a coverage issue becomes clear. Resolving it can mean additional outreach, repeated checks, or changes to the patient’s plans. Earlier clarity gives patients and providers more opportunity to address those questions before they become barriers.

Connecting the search for care with the intake experience

Sohar’s technology can find coverage using basic patient information, such as a name and date of birth, and then verify benefits and determine provider network status. Through its existing relationship with Zocdoc, those capabilities have supported insurance discovery and verification while patients search for care.

The acquisition creates an opportunity to extend that work as Zocdoc expands beyond its marketplace into infrastructure that supports finding and booking care across more channels.

For behavioral health, the broader implication is the connection between care navigation and provider operations. Information that helps a patient choose a provider also needs to support the team preparing for that patient’s visit. Making coverage information accurate, useful, and actionable across those steps can reduce repeated administrative work and help patients move forward with greater confidence.

A practical priority for behavioral health leaders

The acquisition raises a useful question for organizations evaluating patient access: At what point does the patient receive a clear insurance answer?

Answering that question requires looking across the journey—from provider search and scheduling through intake and financial clearance. It means identifying where coverage questions remain unresolved, where teams repeat checks, and where patients receive information too late to make an informed decision.

Sohar will continue operating under its existing name, maintaining its platform, products, and customer relationships, while its team becomes part of Zocdoc.

The broader opportunity is to make insurance clarity part of how people find and enter care. For behavioral health organizations, that means treating coverage information as an essential part of access—and helping patients understand their options before the first visit.
